Ronald Reagan, the 40th President of the United States, is perhaps the second most popular and consequential Republican President after Abraham Lincoln. Like Lincoln, the Great Emancipator, Reagan’s careful rhetorical style proved deeply persuasive to the American people and earned him the name of “Great Communicator.”

Elected during a moment of national self-doubt and economic stagnation in 1980, he is credited with reviving the national economy, recovering the nation’s optimism about the future, and taking the pivotal steps to end the long Cold War struggle with the Soviet Union. His background as a Hollywood actor before entering politics, his idiosyncratic conservatism, and his age (he was the oldest person elected to the presidency) mark him as an extraordinary figure among conservatives and among all of our Presidents, making him a model to be studied closely and emulated by conservatives today and in the future.

In 1967, Reagan was sworn in as the Governor of California after defeating two-term governor Pat-Brown. His two terms as governor were the foundation of his political views and shape his style of leadership. In 1980, Reagan ran to become the President of the United States against incumbent President Jimmy Carter and won in a landslide victory. During the election, Reagan secured the electoral votes of 46 out of 50 states. Never in American history has there been a Presidential Candidate that was met with widespread approval. He would later run for re-election and won every state except for Minnesota and D.C. During his time as President, Reagan fought for less economic regulations to support business in the United States, lowered taxes, and was firm when dealing with communism. His economic ideas would be later called “Reaganomics” and his Presidency saw inflation decrease from 12.5% to 4.4% during his last year in office, the decline of the unemployment rate from 7.5% to 5.4%, GDP growth saw a high of 8.6% averaging 3.4% throughout his terms, and nominal GDP growth peaked at 12.2% averaging 7.4% during his term. President Reagan signed into action the greatest amnesty act for immigrants in American History with approximately 3 million undocumented immigrants given amnesty. His hope with signing the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 was to give immigrants a pathway to become citizens but be firm in reducing the number of undocumented immigrants entering the country in the future. President Reagan’s values, ideals, and policies still shape today’s modern political landscape and his legacy will have an effect on generations to come.

Reagan’s spirit of entrepreneurship and bold leadership is why Leadership Initiatives is proud to dedicate the Ronald Reagan Leadership Scholarship in his honor. With this scholarship, we hope to inspire a new generation of conservative change makers who passionately seek to be a force for change in the vain of President Reagan.

Wilma Mankiller (b. 1945) was an American author and Native American Tribal Chief. In 1983, Makiller served under the Cherokee Nation’s Principal Chief Ross Swimmer as the deputy chief. After Swimmer stepped down, Mankiller ran and was elected to be the first female Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. At the beginning of her tenure, Cherokee leadership was dominated by male-only leadership, and she fought for female inclusion in high ranking positions.

Throughout her three terms as chief Mankiller reformed the Cherokee Nation through development projects that funded tribally owned businesses, improved infrastructure, and built hydroelectric facilities. With a heavy focus on community development as chief, she created the Cherokee Nation Community Development Department to continue her efforts after she leaves office. Mankiller’s efforts for better tribal-federal negotiations and improved relations with the federal government is the basis for the current Cherokees’ government to government relationship with the federal government. She later went on to be a guest professor at Dartmouth University and in 1998 was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bill Clinton. Bold visionaries and pioneers of positive reform are why Leadership Initiatives is dedicating the Wilma Mankiller Heritage Scholarship in her honor.

Her push for improving the quality of life for the Cherokee and improved relations serves as an inspiration to today’s native youth. The continuing mission of Leadership Initiatives is to train tomorrow’s leaders and this scholarship will help support the development of talented native American youth. With this scholarship, Leadership Initiatives hopes to enable indigenous youth to be the driving force for positive change as Wilma Mankiller was.

Madeleine Albright was an American politician who immigrated from the Czech Republic, who later went on to become the first female Secretary of State under Bill Clinton’s Administration from 1997 to 2001. Her family emigrated to the U.S. in 1948. In May of 2012, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. After her time as Secretary of State, Secretary Albright went on to teach Diplomacy for the Georgetown School of Foreign Service among many other ventures. Secretary Albright embodies the value that immigrants hold to our country. Like Secretary Albright, Leadership Initiatives hopes to have distinguished students who immigrated to the U.S. attending our programs, as an effort to ensure that there are different viewpoints and perspectives adding to our dialogue at our summits. We also hope to help shape the future Madeleine Albright’s of the future and provide those who attend our programs with the opportunity to positively impact their global community. Foreign-born immigrants who strive for excellence, have a thirst for service and are actively engaging to improve themselves and their leadership abilities are the ideal candidates for this scholarship. Official Portrait of Justice Sonia Sotomayor
Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor was born in the Bronx to a Puerto Rican working class family with a limited educational training. Justice Sotomayor went on to receiving a full ride scholarship to Princeton and eventually graduating summa cum laude and the Pyne Prize in 1976. Moving on to graduate school Justice Sotomayor received her J.D. from Yale in 1979. Justice Sotomayor began her career as an assistant district attorney for the borough of Manhattan focusing on prosecuting robbery, assault, murder, police brutality and child pornography cases. On May 26, 2009, President Barack Obama nominated her to the Supreme Court, and confirmed by the Senate in August of 2009 making her the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice. Justice Sonia Sotomayor is the embodiment of how much a determined and driven individual can achieve in the United States. Her legally career is riddled with service and the defense of the public. She has shown initiative, leadership, and civic engagement through her work, and for these reason Leadership Initiatives is naming the Sonia Sotomayor First Generation Scholarship after her. Through this scholarship we hope to give first generation students the opportunity to attend our programs, and give them the tools necessary to shape the world in the manner that Justice Sotomayor has. She is an inspiration and a role model for all students participating in every Leadership Initiative youth development program, and we look forward to working with talented individuals who display and represent the values she personifies.

You may pay the full tuition amount at the time of registration. If you prefer to schedule a payment plan for tuition, a minimum $500 down payment is required to hold your place for the conference. Payment plans are available and we are happy to work with applicants in advance to create a plan. Typically, payments are the total cost of tuition (minus the down payment) divided by the number of months left before the conference. For example, if the cost is $2750, and you place your $500 down payment six months in advance, that would leave you with five monthly payments of $450. Failure to pay for the program in full by the first Friday of the final month will result in the loss of your spot in the program. After that, all standard cancellation fees apply.

Sample Payment plans:
Payment PlanDeposit*Payments**
3 Months$500Two Payments of $1125 each
6 Months$500Five Payments of $450
9 Months$500Eight Payments of $281.25

*We do not charge deposit or installment fees. **Once the initial deposit of $500 is completed, the student will have access to one year of TestRocker SAT or ACT training and Scholarship Assistance through Scholly within 24 hours. Any additional payments made afterward can be refunded in full if the student cancels on or before May 31, 2018. Cancellations made on or after June 1, 2018, will be refunded all but $1000 to cover deposits made for program participation.

Fundraising

While Leadership Initiatives would like to meet the financial needs of all students, the large volume of scholarship applicants combined with limited funding provided by sponsors, means that not all students will receive scholarships. Leadership Initiatives staff is available to help create a fundraising plan which can help make any of our programs an affordable experience for all applicants. You can find more information about Leadership Initiatives’ fundraising options including ideas, sample letters, a planning worksheet and more in our Fundraising Guide. Students can also take advantage of online fundraising tools such as GoFundMe, Wishbone, or EFundraising. In addition to raising money, fundraising gives students the chance to develop planning, organizational, communication and leadership skills. Be sure to contact our Office of Admissions to let us know you will be fundraising. Once you have raised enough funds to cover your deposit of $500, please promptly notify the Office of Admissions or enroll to secure your space in the program here. If you need any assistance, please contact one of our Admissions Advisers at (202) 738-1115 or by email at fundraising@lichange.org.

gofundme GoFundMe allows you to create a personal fundraising site specifically for your tuition needs, so that you may invite others to play a direct part in your Leadership Initiatives story. Your friends, family, neighbors, schoolmates and acquaintances will be eager to support your goals and celebrate your successes when you give them the chance to be a personal part of your journey. GoFundMe removes the physical barriers traditionally associated with receiving financial support from the people in our lives.

Wishbone Wishbone is a non-profit that gives students the chance to pursue their passions. Through crowdfunding and sponsorships, students can attend life-changing summer programs. Wishbone provides the tools students need to find, apply to, and fund their summer experiences. Each student teams up with an Advocate (a teacher or mentor) and together they use Wishbone’s robust fundraising toolkit to raise funds for program tuition. Wishbone currently serves low-income high school students from New York City, the SF Bay Area, Connecticut, and Los Angeles.
