About The Advanced Medical and Public Health Summit

A Life-Changing Experience

This summer join the brightest high school students from across the globe who want to transform the world. At the Advanced Medical and Public Health Summit, hosted by Georgetown University, you will collaborate with medical experts as you research treatments for real patients in Nigeria. Health professionals will guide you through the process of detecting diseases and treating patients. Most importantly, you will be forming real diagnoses for real patients who will be given the funding to undergo treatment and cure their illness. This unparalleled experience means your work will have an immediate impact on developing communities. You are never too young to make a meaningful, authentic impact in your world.

Leadership Initiatives (LI) is excited to provide the Advanced Medical and Public Health Summit this summer. LI is a well established non-profit organization that assists leaders in the developing world to identify and support associations that will bring growth to their communities. LI helps organizational leaders secure local financing and provides the training necessary for developing skilled labor. Once organizations are established, LI continues to guide leaders as they plan for expansions or struggle to overcome the obstacle of a struggling community. You can become a part of the important effort!

Transform The World Today!

Over the course of ten days, students will research a variety of public health epidemics affecting Nigerian Communities, including how to diagnose and effectively treat these diseases. They will work to surmount the obstacles that come with medical care in developing countries as they also explore Washington DC, experience exclusive medical simulations and hear from health professionals in a variety of fields.

This summit provides a truly unique experience–the opportunity to treat a real patient. First, a team of medical experts will educate you about some of the most widespread and deadly diseases in Nigeria, while LI staff in Nigeria and on-site at Georgetown will help you connect with Nigerian health professionals via Skype. Translators will facilitate your discussions of illnesses and possible treatments. Finally, you will instruct a doctor in Nigeria on how to examine a patient in real time via virtual reality technology, and then diagnose the patient and offer a treatment plan. Once diagnosed properly, your patient will then be provided with the financial means for this plan to be implemented. You will have the opportunity to save lives!

You will also have the opportunity to join the Leadership Initiatives’ International Business Alliance Program (IBAP). IBAP is a highly competitive leadership program in which students spend 12-18 months working with Nigerian businesses. As a Summit participant, you will bypass the application process and continue working with your business partner and/or another business. You may also form student teams at your school. Members of IBAP will receive college search and application assistance, individualized letters of recommendation, one-on-one conferences with highly qualified mentors, free online SAT prep courses from TestRocker, scholarship application assistance and other services. Most significant, however, is the satisfaction you will experience as you continue to change and impact lives around the world!

Experience Washington D.C.

College Life

The International Leadership and Business Summit offers an incredible array of experiences, and living for a week at one of the oldest and most prestigious Universities in the country is an exciting one that can help prepare students for what college life has to offer. Undoubtedly, while there are many exciting aspects of selecting and being accepted to your school of choice, the experience of living on a college campus is one-of-a-kind.

We know when students live on college campuses, they often earn better grades and have a greater chance of graduating. Students attending our program at Georgetown University will be able to preview college life (while highly supervised) by staying in college dorms, and experience the college campus environment as they visit stores, restaurants, classrooms and learn from college professors.

In addition, they will receive a guided tour of Georgetown University, which will allow our future leaders to interact with college students and see what real college life has to offer.

Discover Washington, D.C.

In the summer of 2018, the Advanced Medical and Public Health Summit will be hosted at Georgetown University. One of the country’s oldest and most prestigious universities, Georgetown overlooks the Potomac River and the campus is an experience unto itself. Students will also be able to experience various tours in Washington D.C. by participating in a  “Choose Your Own Adventure” day.

Students will be able to explore the National Institute of Health, MedStar Simulation Training & Education Lab, and The National Museum of Health and Medicine. Students will be able to choose between visiting Georgetown’s University School of Medicine, The Red Cross, or John Hopkins University.  Students will also be certified by The Red Cross in CPR, First Aid, and AED. After lunch, our students will yet again get to choose another area of exploration. After lunch, our students will yet again get to choose another area of exploration.

Our second option includes a number of sites at The Smithsonian Museums such as: The Air and Space Museum, Natural History Museum, American History Museum, and National Museum of African American History and Culture (as available, since tickets are limited). Additional options include students being able to take part in a National Mall Monument Walking Tour which will take students to the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the Jefferson Memorial, the Martin Luther King Memorial, and if time permits, a few more areas of interest.

These adventures represent some of the most iconic and memorable experiences that Washington D.C. has to offer.

Red Cross Certification

Begin your medical career with training from Red Cross’s world-class instructors and become certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED.

Get First Aid, CPR, and AED certified and learn how to help when it’s most needed. Students will be taught how to react when faced with health crises that can occur in everyday life. They’ll be given the tools needed to not only help others but also save lives.

Not only does being certified in these fields open up multiple job opportunities, but students will get a look into the basics of what being a doctor means. First Aid, CPR, and AED classes will prepare students for future careers as doctors, nurses, caretakers, as well as helpful knowledge that every person should have.

These interactions give students a chance to further broaden their horizons; one of the main goals of the Advanced Medical and Public Health Summit.
