This summer, join the best and the brightest high school students from around the country who want to transform the world! At the International Leadership and Business Internship Summit (ILBIS), held at Georgetown University, you will collaborate with international development experts as you explore solutions to real-world problems faced by small businesses in Northern Nigeria. Professional mentors will hone your leadership skills and acquaint you with the needs of developing communities. Best of all, you will be creating REAL solutions for REAL business owners across the globe. This unique experience means your work will have an immediate impact. You are never too young to make a meaningful, authentic impact in your world!
Leadership Initiatives (LI) is excited to host the International Leadership and Business Internship Summit this summer! LI is an international development nonprofit organization that assists leaders in the developing world to identify and support businesses appropriate to their communities. LI helps entrepreneurs secure local financing and provides the business classes and training necessary for developing, competent managers and skilled labor. Once businesses are established, LI continues to guide owners as they plan for expansion or struggle to overcome major and minor obstacles. YOU can become part of this important effort!
Transform The World Today!
Over the course of six days, teams of students will form partnerships with small business owners in Nigeria. There are a variety of businesses that need solutions as they launch, expand, and overcome obstacles, such as fish and poultry farmers, welders, auto mechanics and textile merchants. These businesses provide necessary products and services to their communities. Your team will address real challenges of these entrepreneurs by researching and designing potential solutions and presenting these solutions to a panel of business development experts. If your team’s proposal is selected, your business owner will receive a grant to implement the solutions you have developed.
This Summit provides a truly unique experience—a direct connection with your business partner. LI staff in Nigeria and on-site at Georgetown will help you learn about each business, its owner, and the challenges that hinder continued growth. Next, you will be introduced via Skype to the owners at their local LI office in Nigeria. Translators facilitate your discussions of problems and viable solutions and help you get to know your partner—not just as a business owner or a beneficiary, but also as a teammate and friend.
After attending the ILBIS, YOU will also have the opportunity to join the Leadership Initiatives’ International Business Internship Program (IBIP). IBIP is a highly competitive leadership program in which students spend 12-18 months working with Nigerian businesses. As a Summit participant, you will bypass the application process and continue working with your business partner and/or another business. You may also form student teams at your school. Members of IBIP will receive college search and application assistance, individualized letters of recommendation, one-on-one conferences with highly qualified mentors, free online SAT prep courses from TestRocker, scholarship application assistance, and other services. Most significant, however, is the satisfaction you will experience as you continue to change and impact lives around the world!
Experience Washington D.C.
The International Leadership and Business Internship Summit offers an incredible array of experiences, and living for a week at one of the oldest and most prestigious Universities in the country is an exciting one that can help prepare students for what college life has to offer. Undoubtedly, while there are many exciting aspects of selecting and being accepted to your school of choice, the experience of living on a college campus is one-of-a-kind.
We know when students live on college campuses, they often earn better grades and have a greater chance of graduating. Students attending our program at Georgetown University will be able to preview college life (while highly supervised) by staying in college dorms, and experiencing the college campus environment as they visit stores, restaurants, classrooms and learn from college professors.
In addition, they will receive a guided tour of Georgetown University, which will allow our future leaders to interact with college students and see what real college life has to offer.
Discover Washington, D.C.
In the summer of 2018, the ILBIS will be hosted at Georgetown University. One of the country’s oldest and most prestigious universities, Georgetown overlooks the Potomac River and the campus is an experience unto itself. Students will also be able experience various tours in Washington D.C. by participating in a “Choose Your Own Adventure” day.
Students can first choose to explore the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Capital, or the U.S. Supreme Court. Students can, then, choose to have lunch at either the Magic Gourd Restaurant, The U.S. Capital Restaurant, or The West Wing Cafe. After lunch, our students will, yet again, get to choose another area of exploration.
Our second option includes a number of sites at The Smithsonian Museums such as: The Air and Space Museum, Natural History Museum, American history Museum, and National Museum of African American History and Culture (as available, since tickets are limited). Additional options include students being able to take part in a National Mall Monument Walking Tour, which will take students to the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the Jefferson Memorial, the Martin Luther King Memorial, and, if time permits, a few more areas of interest.
These adventures represent some of the most iconic and memorable experiences that Washington D.C. has to offer.
One of the most unique experiences offered at the International Leadership and Business Summit is the chance for students to tour three embassies within one day.
On the program’s third day, the Nigerian Embassy, along with the Israeli, Austrian, British, Egyptian, Italian Embassies, as well as the Embassy of The People’s Republic of China will open their doors to program participants. Students will be able to interact with members of foreign governments and enjoy a day of fun, food, culture and more. This exclusive Leadership Initiatives event offers visitors a rare look inside the embassies and provides a unique opportunity for them to experience the cultural heritage and national traditions of different nations.
While touring embassy row, all of our students will attend a meet and greet at the Nigerian Embassy with top embassy officials and members of the State Department. After the meet and greet, students will be treated to a special afternoon lunch with meals selected by the embassy staff of each nation on that day’s embassy tour. Students will be able to select two additional embassies to tour.
These interactions give students a chance to further broaden their horizons: one of the main goals of the ILBS.
