About The Advanced Law & Trial Internship Summit

A Life-Changing Experience

This summer join the best and brightest high school students from around the country who want to transform the world! At the Advanced Law and Trial Summit (ALTS), held at Georgetown University, you will collaborate with Washington DC’s attorneys and prosecutors as you and our team come up with the best defense for a real criminal defense case. Professional mentors will hone your leadership skills and acquaint you with the skills and background information necessary for creating the greatest case possible. Best of all, you will be creating a REAL defense for REAL defendant in a REAL court case. This unique experience means your work will have an immediate impact. You are never too young to make a meaningful, authentic impact in your world!

Leadership Initiatives (LI) is excited to host the Advanced Law and Trial Summit this summer! LI is an award-winning non-profit organization that assists leaders in the developing world to identify and support associations that will bring growth to their communities LI helps entrepreneurs secure local financing and provides the business classes and training necessary for developing competent managers and skilled labor. LI is also now expanding to have both medical and law programs to help people in Nigeria receive better medical treatment and to encourage students to become future leaders.

Transform The World Today!

Over the course of ten days, students will form groups and then be partnered with an attorney and defendant, for whom they will come up with a defense. There are various cases that students can choose to work on, such as Nondiscrimination Protections, Possession with the Intent to Distribute, Robbery in the First Degree, and a civil court case of Child Custody. Your team will learn about the case from top law professors at Georgetown University, taught courtroom procedures vital to the case and learn how to build a formidable defense from former prosecutors and defense attorneys. Each team will then present their case to a panel of judges including the attorney and defendant along with a retired federal judge. If your team’s defense is selected it will be used in the court case and all of the team members names will appear on the official court documents.

This Summit provides a truly unique experience—a direct connection with an actual defendant and attorney. Georgetown professors and DC attorneys will help you to learn about the climate of a courtroom and help you prepare to present your case while giving feedback on the feasibility of your defense. Once you have a greater understanding of the case you will be able to meet the defendant and attorney in person and communicate step-by-step as you develop a case.

You will also have the opportunity to join the Leadership Initiatives’ International Business Alliance Program (IBAP). IBAP is a highly competitive leadership program in which students spend 12-18 months working with Nigerian businesses. As a Summit participant, you will bypass the application process and continue working with a business partner in Nigeria. You may also form student teams at your school. Members of IBAP will receive college search and application assistance, individualized letters of recommendation, one-on-one conferences with highly qualified mentors, free online SAT prep courses from TestRocker, scholarship application assistance, and other services. Most significant, however, is the satisfaction you will experience as you continue to change and impact lives around the world!

Experience Washington D.C.

College Life

The Advanced Law & Trial Internship Summit offers an incredible array of experiences, and living for a week at one of the oldest and most prestigious Universities in the country is an exciting one that can help prepare students for what college life has to offer. Undoubtedly, while there are many exciting aspects of selecting and being accepted to your school of choice, the experience of living on a college campus is one-of-a-kind.

We know when students live on college campuses, they often earn better grades and have a greater chance of graduating. Students attending our program at Georgetown University will be able to preview college life (while highly supervised) by staying in college dorms, and experience the college campus environment as they visit stores, restaurants, classrooms and learn from college professors.

In addition, they will receive a guided tour of Georgetown University, which will allow our future leaders to interact with college students and see what real college life has to offer.

Students will also be able to choose to visit the Metropolitan Police Department, The Public Defender Service, or the Washington D.C. Department of CorrectionAfter lunch, our students will yet again get to choose another area of exploration.

Our second option includes a number of sites at The Smithsonian Museums such as: The Air and Space Museum, Natural History Museum, American History Museum, and National Museum of African American History and Culture (as available, since tickets are limited). Additional options include students being able to take part in a National Mall Monument Walking Tour which will take students to the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the Jefferson Memorial, the Martin Luther King Memorial, and if time permits, a few more areas of interest.

Interested in a career in law enforcement? Want to see what it would be like to be an officer? Fascinated by the inner workings of a police force? Well then look no further! As a student of Leadership Initiatives Advanced Law & Trial Internship Summit you will be offered the chance to join one of D.C.’s finest in a ride along. Students, two at a time, will get to ride along in a police car for an hour and experience what it’s like to be on officer while exploring our nation’s capital.
